Childhood Abuse and Trauma Survivors (C.A.T.S.) is a no-cost, peer-led therapy group that was founded in 2020 by Mary Trexler to provide a resource for those in our community who are victims of childhood abuse and trauma to work towards healing through peer sharing while taking advantage of the holistic benefits of the interaction with the cats themselves.
Having opened Mochas and Meows just months prior to the onset of COVID-19, Trexler was suddenly faced with professional uncertainty, not knowing what this would mean for her new business and the investment her family had made to see her dream come to life; the personal uncertainty of life in general but also on behalf of her children who now found themselves in a forever-Spring Break limbo; and all of this on top of the mental illnesses with which she’d battled throughout her life from the abuse she’d suffered in her own childhood. She began sharing her struggles with friends who admitted that they were also in a similar frame of mind with the unprecedented events. And so, from the dark place in which she found herself in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the silver lining of C.A.T.S. was born.
Childhood Abuse and Trauma Survivors meet afterhours on Thursdays in the cat lounge to share our current and past traumas in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.
We always welcome guests and new members, see Purrista for details.
